Ingredients

  • 8 mint leaves, fresh

  • 3/4 oz lime juice, fresh

  • 1 oz simple syrup

  • 1.5 oz gin (London Dry Style recommended)

  • 4 oz ginger beer

  • Garnish
  • mint leaves

  • lime wedge

Directions

  • Add mint, lime juice, and syrup to a cocktail shaker. Muddle well.
  • Add gin. Fill the shaker with ice.
  • Shake well.
  • Fill glass with fresh ice and strain cocktail into it.
  • Top with ginger beer.
  • Add garnish & enjoy!

Notes

  • Simple Syrup is so easy to make yourself. In a saucepan, combine equal parts sugar and water. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat & allow to cool.
  • If you’re really picky about herb particles in your drink, try double straining it. If you want a stronger minty flavor, try not straining at all. Be aware, you’ll end up drinking down plenty of mint chunks this way.

Modify the Gin Gin Mule

The Gin Gin Mule is a pretty simple cocktail, but that doesn’t mean you can’t customize the recipe. Check out one of these Gin Gin Mule modification options:

Gin

An easy modification is to try the Gin Gin Mule with different varieties of gin. It’s usually recommended you use a London Dry gin. Stick with that but try a different brand. Or try a completely different gin style (Old Tom Gin or a Geographic Gin).

Switch the gin for vodka. It will give more emphasis on the mint, lime, and ginger beer (since vodka has a blander flavor).

Make it virgin by using club soda, tonic water, or more ginger beer.

Ginger Beer

Ginger beer isn’t actually beer. It’s (typically) non-alcoholic. There are plenty of ginger beers on the market and they have a huge range of flavors on the subtle to spicy spectrum.

One way you can modify your mule is by switching up the ginger beer. Experiment with different brands and ginger “strengths.

If you want a sweeter cocktail, swap the ginger beer for ginger ale (if you do this, I’d recommend reducing or eliminating the simple syrup).

Mint

Mint is a delicious herb in the gin gin mule but you can swap it for something else. Try switching mint for basil, marjoram, or rosemary.

Try a Different Mule

This isn’t really a modification of the gin gin mule, but there are plenty of other mule recipes you can try. Check out my Moscow Mule Recipe or my Kentucky Mule Recipe.

Tools & Glassware

A gin gin mule needs a few extra tools to make.

Copper Mugs

Traditionally, mules are served in copper mugs and the Gin Gin Mule is no exception! Copper mugs respond to the temperature inside the mug (in this case cold) which helps keep your drink icy cold for longer.

Note: You could use different glassware but you’ll never regret using a copper mug.

Muddler

Any recipe that calls for mint likely calls for muddling. Get yourself a muddler for the best muddling.

To muddle, press down on the mint with your muddler and twist. Do this several times until fragrant and broken down.

Cocktail Shaker

Gin Gin Mules are best when they’ve been well shaken which means you need a shaker.

Strainer

Most people don’t want to be drinking hunks of mint (although, personally I’m fine with it). To avoid that, you’ll want to strain the drink before serving.
