You might have heard that Canadians add maple syrup to everything. It’s totally untrue! Err, at least, we don’t add maple syrup to everything more than once. Maple syrup does not make everything better but in a shot of rum? Divine!
Embrace the maple syrup in this delicious shot. As a Canadian, I encourage it.
Sticky Canadian Shot Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 oz Rum, divided
- 1/2 oz 100% Maple Syrup
Instructions
- Pour half the rum into a large shot glass.
- Gently pour the maple syrup in.
- Pour in the remaining rum.
- Shoot!

Modify This Recipe
The Sticky Canadian Shot can be modified in a few easy ways.
The Rum
You might have noticed my recipe says, “rum.” Traditionally this recipe is served with white rum but it’s also delicious with dark or spiced rum. In fact, spiced rum and plain maple syrup is my fave Sticky Canadian.
What about flavored rums? I’ve never personally tried a Sticky Canadian Shot made with a flavored rum but I can’t see why it wouldn’t work for some flavors like coffee and vanilla. I would be wary of adding maple syrup to fruity or sugary flavored rums because it might become way too sweet. If you try a Sticky Canadian with a flavored rum, let me know how it goes!!
The Maple Syrup
It’s essential you use a 100% pure maple syrup in this recipe!
But (and I feel like this is such a Canadian thing to know), there are different types and styles of maple syrup. Here are three high-quality 100% maple syrup brands to check out:
Escuminac is a premium Canadian maple syrup brand that offers three different styles of syrup: a velvety Extra Rare, an intensely dark and robust Late Harvest, & a rich and refined amber Great Harvest.
Runamok is a quality Vermont maple syrup brand that offers 3 types of aged maple syrups and 13 varieties of infused maple syrups (you really should try the strawberry rose or the coffee).
Old State Farms is an excellent Pennsylvanian maple syrup brand with 3 types of aged maple syrups and 3 varieties of infused maple syrups (don’t miss the chipotle one).
