What is Vegan?
I’m going to directly quote the Vegan Society because they’re the experts:
“Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.”
So this means ANYTHING that comes from an animal IN ANY WAY is to be avoided. Obvious items like milk, eggs, and meat. And less obvious items like honey (because it’s exploiting bees), marshmallows, gelatin (comes from pigs), and countless other things.
Tools You Need to Make a Smoothie
You’ll need a blender and vegan ingredients to make these smoothie recipes.
Blenders
A blender is the only tool you really need to make a vegan smoothie. You can find a million different blenders from $10 to well as much as you’re willing to spend!
The Vitamix is considered to be the holy grail of blenders but it comes at holy grail price point. If you can’t afford it, there are plenty of other reasonably priced options.
I have a Nutribullet and it works just fine. One day when it breaks, I’ll probably replace it with a Vitamix. But until that day comes it’s fine!
Vegan Protein Powders
Protein powders are often whey-based which is off-limits to vegans (it comes from the cow). There are numerous options for vegan protein powders, I’m going to talk about six different options (but there are plenty more).
Soy Protein
Soy is one of the most common vegan proteins. As a protein powder, soy is a complete protein!
However, most soy protein powder is genetically modified (GM) in the US. Some people are trying to reduce their consumption of GM products.
Serving Size: 28g (1/4 cup)
Calories: 95
Protein: 22g
Brown Rice Protein
Brown rice protein is not a complete protein but it’s a good source of BCAAs.
Brown rice protein can be less expensive than other vegan protein options however there is a risk of arsenic contamination. Make sure you choose a protein powder that tests for arsenic!!!
Serving Size: 28g (1/4 cup)
Calories: 107
Protein: 22g
Pea Protein
Pea protein is made from yellow split peas. It’s not a complete protein but it is a great source of BCAAs.
Serving Size: 28g (1/4 cup)
Calories: 100
Protein: 21g
Pumpkin Seed Protein
Pumpkin Seed Protein is not a complete protein. However, pumpkin seeds do provide a lot of other nutrients (like magnesium and zinc).
Serving Size: 28g (1/4 cup)
Calories: 103
Protein: 18g
Hemp Protein
Hemp protein is not a complete protein. It also has less protein than a lot of other options, however, it’s an excellent source of a variety of other nutrients (like fiber, iron, zinc, and more).
Serving Size: 28g (1/4 cup)
Calories: 108
Protein: 12g
Protein Blends
Many vegan protein powders are a blend of different proteins. The major advantage of this is the creation of a complete protein from the blend.
Be careful to check out any additives as blended proteins often have lengthier ingredient lists. Some might be great (like quinoa) but others might just be added sweeteners (or worse).
Nutritional profiles for protein blends will vary depending on the blend.
The Minimalist Baker did a very comprehensive review of 13 different vanilla protein powders. Check it out!
